What to Wear to Work for a Hospitality Job

What to Wear to Work for a Hospitality JobWhat to Wear to Work for a Hospitality JobAre you starting ahospitality job and arent ayawhat to wear? When you work at a job in the hospitality industry, you will most likely be given some sort of uniform or specific guidelines about what to wear to work. Be sure to follow whatever instructions you are given. If you arent told anything about the dress code, check with your manager or the human resources department. However, there are also some general rules you should keep in mind when dressing for work in the hospitality industry. By dressing appropriately from day one, you will impress your manager as well as the customers you serve. General Tips for Dressing for a Hospitality Job Be professional. Follow whatever rules you are given about what to wear to work. However, if you are given little direction on what to wear, dress in professional business attire. This is particularly the case if you are working the front of house at a partic ularly conservative restaurant or hotel, or if you are in a management ort. For men, professional business attire might mean a suit or pants with a button-down shirt and tie. For women, it might mean a dress and blazer. If the atmosphere is more casual, or if you are part of the back of house staff, such as a cook or housekeeper, you can dress in business casual attire. For men, this might mean chinos and a dress shirt, with or without a tie. For women, this can mean pants and a blouse or a sheath dress. Make the customer stand out, not your clothes. In hospitality, your job is to serve the customer. Therefore, you dont want your clothing to stand out so much that it distracts from the customers. Avoid flashy jewelry or lots of makeup. Also, keep your colors neutral- blacks, grays, browns, and dark blues are best. You can always add a pop of color with a scarf, simple necklace, or colored blouse under a neutral blazer or cardigan. Wear comfortable shoes. Almost anyone in the hospita lity industry will tell you this is a lesson you will learn quickly after being on your feet all day. Wear shoes that you can walk in for long periods of time. Comfortable black loafers or, if the environment is casual, black sneakers are good choices. Try to find shoes with nonslip soles you dont want to slip while holding a plate of food Take care of your clothes. Whatever you end up wearing to work, be sure it is tailored (not too tight or loose), washed, and ironed. Shoes should be clear of scuffs or stains. Customers will be distracted if you look messy, so be sure your look is clean and polished. Develop good grooming habits. Your clothes matter, but so does the way you present the rest of yourself. Like your clothing and makeup, your hairstyle should not be too distracting. If you work in the food industry, you want your hair out of your face- and away from the food. Put your hair up, cover it up, or wear it short. What to Wear for a Restaurant Job In a restaurant, hosts, servers, and bartenders (the front of house staff) will typically be asked to wear solid colored slacks or a skirt, a solid colored button down, or a collared or logo shirt. Sometimes there will be an apron or hat to pull the look together. If you are given little direction on what to wear, dress professionally. Men can wear button-down shorts and dress pants or chinos. If the restaurant is more upscale, or if you hold a managerial role, you might wear a dress vest or tie. Chefs, cooks, and their assistants (the back of house staff) typically wear a chef coat with slacks and comfortable closed-toe shoes. Women can wear button-down shorts and dress pants, a skirt and blouse, or a dress. Comfortable shoes are particularly important in the restaurant industry. Make sure you are wearing shoes that you can walk around in for a long shift. Also be sure to keep long hair away from your face, perhaps in a bun, ponytail, or braid, or wrap it in a headscarf. You also want to be well groomed, particularly your nails. If you are touching food in any way, you will need to have clean hands. What to Wear for a Hotel Job Hotels often require uniforms or offer very specific guidelines for what to wear to work. As an employee, you are a representative of the hotel, and you need to dress appropriately. If you have little guidance on what to wear, dress in business professional attire, avoiding anything too flashy. Keep jewelry to a minimum piercings and tattoos should be covered when possible hair and makeup should be conservative. Invest in comfortable, closed-toe shoes, as you will spend a lot of time on your feet. Sneakers are often not allowed, so find some comfortable loafers or other more professional shoes. What to Wear for a Resort or Spa Job Resorts, spas, and clubs vary in their dress codes according to your position and their location. For example, a tropical resort is going to have more casual standards than a spa in a metropolitan city. There may well be a uniform required, or a jacket or coat to wear with your own conservative clothing. Again, remember to wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes. What to Wear to a Hospitality Interview Perhaps you dont have a job yet but are preparing for an interview in the hospitality industry. Dress a bit more formal than the staff. Before the interview, check out what the employees are wearing. If you arent sure what they wear, call the manager and ask. Dress a bit more formal than the employees. For example, if everyone is wearing shorts and a T-shirt, wear something business casual, like chinos and a polo shirt. If everyone wears a suit and tie, wear your best suit. Generally, you will also dress a bit more formally if you are applying for a job in a manager or supervisor role, like a hotel manager or restaurant manager. For women, this might mean a suit, dress pants, and a blouse, or a dress and cardigan. For men, this might mean slacks and a button-down and tie, or a suit. Fit in with the cultu re. While you want to look polished, be sure to fit in with the company culture. For example, you dont want to wear a suit and tie if everyone that works at the organization wears shorts and a tank top. If youre working for a trendy new hotel, you might get away with wearing a more fashionable or stylish top or dress. However, when in doubt, it is better to dress conservatively. Stand out (just a little). You want your interview to make you stand out from the crowd. You can do this by answering interview questions well, by acting professionally, and by showing enthusiasm for the job. You can also do this in subtle ways with your outfit. Generally, keep your colors neutral, and limit your accessories and makeup. However, if you want to add something to make you stand out, pick one thing, like a pop of color in your tie or a statement necklace. But remember, in hospitality, you want the client- not you- to stand out, so keep it subtle. Look polished. Make sure that not only is your ou tfit appropriate, but also that your entire look is polished. Wash and iron (or dry clean) your outfit right before wearing it. Complete the look with professional, polished shoes. Make sure your hair is well groomed as well. All of these little things will help complete your professional look.

Les jeux sont faits

Les jeux sont faitsLes jeux sont faitsAnd now we see how they play out. This week, The American Lawyer released its 2009 Global 100 ranking of the worlds highest-grossing law firms. The biggest upset (which isnt news to those who have been following the firms financial travails) is Clifford Chances dethroning by Linklaters. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has also vaulted over its larger Magic Circle rival to take the No. 2 spot, leaving CC in third place. The presence of so many UK firms at the top prompts AmLaws Richard Lloyd to examine whether The English AdvantageBritish firms hedging their bets against a downturn by spreading the risk across global networks (the sort of hedge that American firms have with their litigation and bankruptcy practices)has proved successful this year. Lloyds conclusion Some firms hedges, it turns out, were more robust than others. Insights on the strategyThe success of an international hedge is elend only about geographic diversity. Its about business mix rather than just scale, says Freshfields chief executive Ted Burke. An international hedge is about timingit reflects the way the downturn spread internationally, says Lovells managing partner David Harris. For some firms, like Shearman Sterling, the impact of the downturn was blunted by the slow progression of the crisis from the United States to Europe and finally to Asia. What next? The same slow rollout is expected to mark the end of the downturn. A growing number of forecasts suggest that Asia will emerge first, led by China. And, according to Linklaters managing partner Simon DaviesGovernment-related work is going to become more important, there will be more regulation. With banks having less leverage, the volume of financial product work will be at a lower level. With continued volatility in the markets, law firms will have to increase the flexibility of their lawyers, partly by broadening training.- posted by vera

Ghosting Job Candidates Can Destroy Your Reputation

Ghosting Job Candidates Can Destroy Your Reputation Ghosting Job Candidates Can Destroy Your Reputation Have you ever gone on a job interview and then heard nothing from the recruiter or hiring manager even after you’ve sent emails or left voicemails? This is called ghosting and while the term originated in personal relationships (you go on a date and then never hear from him again), it occurs in hiring all of the time. For many years, ghosting was something recruiters and hiring managers have done to job candidates. When the unemployment rate was high, they didn’t see a downside to ghosting: new, qualified candidates were easy to find, recruit, and hire. The Effect of Ghosting Prospective Employees In 2018, though, the unemployment rate is lower than it’s been in a long time, and candidates and employees have turned the tables on employers. Chip Cutter, the managing editor at LinkedIn, noted that candidates are not returning calls from recruiters and people have started simply not showing up for work rather than giving two weeks’ notice. Turnabout is fair play, after all. Why should candidates treat recruiters and hiring managers with respect when they haven’t been treated with respect for years? Well, employers and candidates should always treat each other respectfully. Many recruiters are learning the hard way that their years of assuming that candidates would always be available are over and that job seekers now have the upper hand. But other than this “revenge,” how does ghosting affect employee recruitment? Recruiters As Public Relations Specialists This may seem ridiculous- recruiters dont talk to the press after all, and they don’t try to get magazine articles written about the company, so why do they need to worry about public relations? Think about it. With whom do recruiters spend a good portion of their time talking? Non-employees, right? And most of those people will never become employees. That’s just the nature for recruiting. If you ghost candidates and treat them poorly, they will speak to their friends, and you will lose out on future candidates and future clients. You fret about customer service roles, but ignore the impact a ghosting recruiter can have on the company’s growth. A bad reputation is a bad reputation- once gained, a bad reputation with prospective employees is difficult to overcome. Shrinking Pipeline for Job Applicants Everyone who applies for a job believes that they are, in some way, qualified for that job. Sometimes, this stretches the imagination, as people send in their resumes to job postings with one matching keyword. But often, candidates are good matches. And everyone who comes in for an interview is a good enough match, right? You certainly don’t hire everyone you interview, but that doesn’t mean all of those people are bad fits for your company forever. Many of them would be great fits for a different position or even the same position in a couple of years. A good recruiter doesn’t just post ads, she learns the people in the industry and keeps a pipeline running so that when a job opens, she can fill it quickly. If you treat prospective employees poorly, you’ve essentially kicked them out of the candidate pipeline. Sure, you can contact them 18 months from now, but they will remember that they came in for three different rounds of interviews and then never heard back- as a recruiter, you ghosted them. Who wants to put themselves through that again? Internal Referrals Decrease One of the best sources for job candidates is your current employees. They are experts in their fields and they tend to know other people who do what they do. But, if they refer their friends and colleagues, who then take the time to come in to interview, and then never hear from you again, they tell your current employees about what you’ve done. Your employees don’t plan to work for your company forever. They need to maintain their reputation in their field. They won’t ruin it by bringing in people who then receive poor treatment. Instead, they’ll quietly stop recommending people for positions within the company. Why Ghosting Happens No one has the time. Every employee is busy. But, treating candidates politely and getting back to those who have interviewed is the right thing to do, and it will save you time in the long run. You’ll increase your positive reputation, build your prospective employee pipeline, and receive referrals from current employees. Not having those things will cost you far more time than having your ATS send out emails to all candidates saying, “Thank you so much for interviewing, however, we’ve decided to go in a different direction. Please do keep us in mind for roles for which you qualify in the future.” Treat people with respect and professionalism because it’s the moral and ethical behavior to exhibit. And it doesn’t hurt that your business will also benefit from prospective employees flocking to your door. At the same time, you will retain and nurture your current employees who feel as if you treated them and their contacts respectfully. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

Professional opinion The business of breaking up a partnership

Professional opinion The business of breaking up a partnership Professional opinion The business of breaking up a partnership *Written anonymously to protect the NOT so innocent.I remember sitting there, just highlighting, highlighting and highlighting, so many numbers, so many charges, so much money- just gone. When we started the company together, it was thrilling. We were young, ambitious, hungry and starting something with a potential magnitude we didn’t know or could even fathom. That’s how a lot of companies start, as an idea, a collaboration. Then all the sudden, you’re in it.The co-founder,  business-boss-gal-pals model is popular- see Gilt, Rent the Runway, Birchbox and Proactiv- and it makes sense why. Everyone loves a partner in crime, you can do double the work and have double the fun, and that feeling of not being alone is, well, a good one. Partnering up with a friend can work out amazingly. Or it can not.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Cut to a few years into your business, em ployees, money and tensions run high, and while you may think your roles are clear as can be, your word means nothing unless it’s in writing.  Breaking up with a business partner might just be the most painful breakup you can go through- because this one comes with a price tag.My story is not unique, but when it happened to me it felt like the world was crashing in. It was hard to breathe, difficult to believe that someone I trusted, and even cared about, could be taking money from a company that we had built together from the ground up. My gut had been telling me for months that something wasn’t right, but I assumed it was more a personal issue and that no matter what was going on between us, we were both equally invested in the business.Wrong.It eventually came to light that not only was my partner not managing our finances, but actually manipulating them. This included racking up unrelated business expenses, disregarding all things tax related, and straight up embezzling mone y.  I was devastated, and what was worse, I had no idea what to do next. I felt ashamed and scared to talk about it- I thought it had to be a reflection on me and how I operated a business. It took me a few years and several conversations to get over it, and through it all, I realized that I wasn’t alone. One business partner taking advantage of another happens, and it happens a lot. Partnerships split up and morph all the time and for all kinds of reasons. Being able to step back back and realize something isn’t working  is a part of being a mature business pro.The hardest- and yet ultimately most helpful- thing for me to accept was that it was NOT my fault.  Trusting someone is not a flaw but a positive characteristic. It takes trust to build a business, and had I been skeptical and suspicious from day one, we would have never gotten off the ground.  Moving on and away from a partner does not have to mean the end of your business, and often, it will actually turn out to be t he beginning of something great.I hope this never happens to you, but if it does, here are my tips for pulling through, and maybe even coming out on top.Don’t overreact. When I found out, I wanted to freak out, confront and deal with it head on, but cooler heads prevailed. Take a deep breath, and assess all the details of the situation to 100% ensure you are in the right before initiating a confrontation.Get your team in place.I was lucky enough to have an incredible lawyer and forensic finance team that helped shape my case and bring to light things I would have overlooked. Beyond that, they were able to deal with the personal communication that I wasn’t emotionally prepared to handle.Handle clients and employees with care. The business of breaking it to your employees and clients is extremely crucial. I personally called each client to explain that my partner and I were parting ways. I followed up with an email of how the transition would work and assured them we were ready to t ake on the challenge. When you do all of this, resist the urge to talk bad about your former partner and keep the details of why you’re splitting to a minimum.Tune out the ‘I told you so’One of the hardest things was hearing from many friends, family, business contacts and clients who swore that “they saw this coming.”  I acknowledged that they meant well, but just tuned it out. Beating myself up wasn’t going to help me move forward, and I had to focus on what was right in front of me.Revise and renewAs roles and responsibilities change in your partnership, update your operating agreement. Even when everything is smooth sailing, it is crucial to know who is in charge of what.Move on and UPI was nervous about keeping the same business name and dealing with the “How is so and so?” questions,  but it gets easier and YOU get better. Heres What Happened When I Stood Up to My Office Bully

Here’s What Happened When I Stood Up to My Office Bully Here’s What Happened When I Stood Up to My Office Bully We all have memories of school bullies we’d like to leave behind. But bullying doesn’t end after graduation- in fact, it’s common in the workplace. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute, bullying is actually four times more common than sexual harassment in the workplace. It’s also an issue that affects both women and men. The thing about it is that it’s not easy to spot, especially given our cultural norms. For example, when I received a series of passive-aggressive emails, I initially brushed them off because I was told the sender was “difficult.” At the time, I didn’t recognize these messages were inappropriate. Too often women ignore or dismiss belittling behavior in the office. As women, we’re conditioned to be nice, to not make waves, to submit to authority. The tide is turning, however. With the rise of the #MeToo movement and #TimesUp campaign, women across the U.S. (and the world) are speaking up about sexual harassment- and putting an end to it. We can speak out to stop bullying, too. That’s why I’m sharing my story. The Starting Point When I experienced workplace bullying, I was starting a new job- one that required me to work directly with this colleague. Let’s call him D. We weren’t in the same department, but D played a key role in the projects I managed. He was 20 years my senior; I was in my twenties. His work was often late, which made my work late, too. This became a problem, so I started trying to hold D accountable for deadlines. That’s when the bullying began. Rather than own up to his tardiness, D belittled me via email. Once, he said he’d told my office friend that it was a “big mistake” I’d taken this job. Other times, he’d find a way to twist a situation and blame me for his lateness. Most of the time, he was just rude, dealing out backhanded compliments with practiced ease. Communicating with him made me anxious. My confidence plummeted. I started thinking maybe what he told my friend was right- maybe I wasn’t cut out for this position. D’s words had me wrapped up in a major case of imposter syndrome. The strangest thing of all? The harassment only happened over email. We rarely saw each other since we worked in different departments. Blame it on socialization or inexperience (or both), but I couldn’t say for sure what was going on. I knew in my gut that something was wrong, and I dreaded our interactions. I think I endured D’s bad behavior for so long because I’d come to believe some of the hurtful, condescending comments he made. He’d been actively intimidating me- and it had been working- but I was too naive to see it. How I Stood Up to Him One day, I got an email from D that really made me mad. I went to my supervisor and told her everything. Then I asked for help. “You’re not going to like this answer,” she said. “The only way to stop this is for you to confront him. You’ve got to call him out.” Surely I’d misheard her. I figured she’d step in or send me to HR. Instead, she wanted me to talk to him. I told her I couldn’t confront him- it made me too uncomfortable. I sat at my desk, palms sweating, and thought. I thought through what I needed to say, how I would say it, and before I could back out, I picked up the phone and dialed D’s number. When my co-worker answered, he seemed startled. “D, this has to stop,” I said. “Your emails are disrespectful and unprofessional. You can’t speak to me that way.” “OK,” he stammered. “OK,” I said abruptly. Then I hung up the phone. My hands were shaking, adrenaline pumping. I felt stunned. The person who spoke on the phone sounded strong, confident, and calm- nothing like the disorganized, in-over-her-head woman D made me out to be. I wasn’t sure what the outcome of our conversation would be, but I was sure of one thing: I’d summoned the courage to confront my bully and in doing so, I rediscovered my voice. What Happened Next The bullying stopped. The emails became polite. My working relationship with D improved. Work became pleasant again, and I began to thrive. I thanked my boss for pushing me to be courageous and to take a stand for myself. The experience was a turning point in my career. After I spoke up to D, I wanted to speak up more. I became more assertive and engaged in meetings and conversations. My confidence grew and I embraced my new role. If you think you’re being bullied at work, I urge you to take action. Start by talking with your supervisor or someone you can trust outside of the office. Document evidence of bullying for your records. Identify what’s hurtful to you and how you’d like to move forward. The next time an incident occurs, confront your bully immediately. If the bullying continues after that, it’s time to talk to HR. If your discomfort confronting the person goes beyond not wanting to have hard conversations and goes into “I feel unsafe doing this,” definitely go to HR. 10 things happy professionals do before 10 a.m.

10 things happy professionals do before 10 a.m. 10 things happy professionals do before 10 a.m. Success often seems like a visionary goal - a feat in life that’s attempted only after many strides, plenty of pitfalls and a healthy serving of endurance. However, for those who consider themselves fulfilled by their career, it’s not only a sense of accomplishment and an impressive LinkedIn profile that defines their satisfaction with their work. In fact, their overall desire to work harder and effectively doesn’t just stem from extra zeros on their paycheck, but rather, it derives from a place of happiness. As the old rhyme reminds, contentment isn’t a destination, but a process - and if you’re smart, a priority for both your professional and personal life. How do you carve in time to, well, improve your overall mood and outlook?Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Sign up for  Morning Motivation! It’s our friendly Facebook ?   that will send you a quick note every weekday morning to help you start strong. Sign up here by clicking Get Started! Here, life coac hes and psychologists explain the shared secrets happy professionals share:1. They get enough sleepEven if college was many moons ago, you’ve likely pulled an all-nighter in the past year. Or, you’ve been so overworked and double-booked that you spent more time tossing and turning than resting. For those people who wake up ready â€" and elated â€" to tackle the day ahead, the eight hours that come before the alarm clock dings are just as important as the minutes that follow it. As licensed therapist Melody Li explains, many workers overlook the power of a good night’s sleep in an effort to push their minds and bodies to the limit. As studies indicate and Li reminds, not reaping the rewards of shuteye usually results in poor memory, difficulty problem-solving and unexplained ups and downs. Professionals who tuck themselves into bed instead of watching Netflix (or their favorite YouTube videos on repeat)? They wake up in better spirits.2. They take their timeSure, there are some mornings that warrant that tempting snooze button, but to rise on the right side of the bed, yoga therapist and natural health expert Dr. Lynn Anderson Ph.D., giving yourself time to linger is key. When you feel frazzled or pressed for time, you’ll not only make more mistakes which can bum-out your confidence levels, but you don’t allow yourself to ease into the day’s tasks in an enjoyable manner. “Get up early enough to relax, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and organize the day. Rushing and running late leads to stress and stress is like a fire extinguisher for happiness. It’s a poisonous gas that makes a mess. Being organized and relaxed creates happiness,” she shares.3. They make their bedSeems simple enough, but how often do you leave your apartment or home in shambles? It’s easy to forget in the hustle of the morning, but motivational speaker and workplace expert Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D. says there’s a sense of glee found when your living area is prime. “A happy professional builds confidence and self-efficacy by completing a simple chore like making her bed before heading to the office. This act sets a ‘can do’ mindset into motion for the day. It’s an easy task to check off  the to-do list,” she shares. “When we accomplish one item on our agenda, we are more driven to accomplish others. Also, as a double bonus, many find it especially comforting and gratifying to climb into a made bed at the end of a long day!”4. They are able to see gratitude and practice humilityWe all have that Wonder Woman (or man) in our life that seemingly glides through life, experiencing it all with ease. They’re top of their game at work, thoughtful and kind to others, brave to their core, and overall, rather funny. If you dig a little deeper, you’ll notice a common thread of humility in these happy-go-lucky, positive-thinking individuals. Career coach and shamanic practitioner John Moore explains  that those who exercise gratitude as part of thei r daily routine tend to be more joyful, in life and in work. He adds that research even indicates thankful people have better relationships and more enduring psychological health.5. They set daily goalsYep, you read that correctly: Happy professionals are masters of setting micro, 24/7 goals that keep them on the right track. As career and branding expert Wendi Weiner explains, those who are able to turnaround the best work with the best attitude take the time to plan ahead, so they aren’t caught in a bind or a last-minute deadline that slipped off their radar. “These are non-negotiable tasks that must be completed for that day. The reason for this is that when you actually achieve what you set out to achieve, that will raise the level of happiness and personal satisfaction,” she says.6. They communicate with othersThose people who are nearly always smiling - and not faking it, but really grinning their heart out - usually want to spend time with one another. Moore explains that the pull comes from a part in our brains called the ‘anterior cingulate cortex’ which measures social status, as well as pain and a high number of opiate receptors. “Social exclusion registers in the brain much like physical pain. In studies, one of the greatest predictors of happiness is the breadth of social networks,” he says.Even if you don’t start chatting up a storm with your partner or your morning-hating roommate, Moore says you’ll start the day off brighter if you, at the very least, communicate in some way. “Happy professionals focus some of their morning time growing and nurturing social connections. Check in with friends, meet someone for coffee, chat up the cute barista - just start talking!” he says.7. They keep their calendars openIt might be difficult to tango around time zones if you have international clients, but if you can help it, health coach Kenneth Rippetoe recommends keeping your calendar completely free until after 10 a.m. This gives y ou time to prepare for your day and be mindful of the moments you’re giving your energy to others, instead of always being readily available. “Practice being intentional with your time and resources. When you are intentional, you make the choices that do align with your value system and goals for your personal and professional life,” he explains.8. They focus on the present and future, not the pastAsk anyone who has been able to send away the skeletons in their closet and they’ll agree that releasing the mistakes of yesteryear was the first step. If you find yourself dreading each day or feeling anxious about how your career will exceed, Weiner suggests taking a page from the notebook of joy-focused professionals who make a habit of living in the moment and preparing for the future with a solid outlook. “Happy professionals will concentrate their focus on the present things they are doing and the present goals they want to achieve as well as the future things they plan to do and/or achieve,” she explains. “Their energy will concentrate less on regrets, and more on taking chances and risks to maximize their happiness.”9. They complete a task that makes them feel powerfulPerhaps it was after you ran you very first 5K. Or landed a client that took months to romance. Or when you finally took the plunge and checked ‘bungee jumping’ off your bucket list. While you can’t perform one-of-a-kind feats every single day (sadly), Li stresses the importance of completing something in the A.M. that set you up to feel powerful throughout the day. Though every person will sing a different tune, it’s most important that you strategize your day to make time for this task. “For many, it’s some type of physical activity like running, swimming, or lifting. For others, it might be solving a tricky puzzle or crossword. It could be meditating, dancing to energetic music, or even stretching,” she explains. “Whatever that looks like to you, spend at least 15 minutes doing something that reinforces the strength that you hold within and carry this sense of power with you into your day.”10. They visualize their successMuch like amping up for the future - whether it’s a month, a year or a decade away - psychologist and relationship expert Anotina Hall says happy careers are much like flourishing love affairs. To truly find the grace and vulnerability in the positions you’re in, you have to be courageous enough to imagine your future. As Hall explains, “Studies have shown that by spending even a few minutes each morning to visualize your goals coming to fruition with ease increases the likelihood of successfully accomplishing those goals.“See your upcoming meeting in vivid detail, visualizing the desired outcome will help make it go well and build your confidence!”

Mission Is What You Do in Your Workplace

Mission Is What You Do in Your Workplace Mission Is What You Do in Your Workplace A mission is your expression of what it is that your organization does. Your mission tells a customer, employee, shareholder, vendor or interested job candidate exactly what you are in business to do. Determining your mission is an early component in corporate or organizational  strategic planning. You cannot identify values, goals, or action plans without first succinctly defining what you do. Sure, you might think, what we do is we make widgets. Do you get, however, that we make widgets is hardly inspirational for your employees, prospective employees, or customers? A Superior Mission Sparks Joy The mission is a description of why your organization exists currently. The mission should inspire your employees to contribute on a daily basis. It should enable them to see the intrinsic value of what they contribute and how you serve your customers. The key to developing a mission is that the words you use must identify the big picture, a big picture that makes your employees think you hung the moon and the stars for them. This mission is a brief description of why your organization exists. For example, TechSmith Corporation makes software that captures your screen. Hardly inspirational, but the company lived with that mission for several years. Gradually, the mission was refined and shared out with the world. It became: We empower people to create remarkable videos and images that help share knowledge and information. Now, thats a powerful expression that attracts and keeps employees. Recently, their mission was updated yet again: TechSmith is the go-to company for visual communication. We help anyone create professional, impactful videos and images to share their knowledge with others. Sharing knowledge is way more inspirational than software that captures your screen or even, we empower people. Developing the Mission Statement Once you and a cross section of your employees or your senior team reach agreement on the contents of your mission, this content is turned into a mission statement. You do this so you can more easily share your story with employees, prospective employees, and your customers. Normally, the mission statement ranges in length from a couple of words to several paragraphs. A shorter mission is more memorable. When a mission stretches on for pages, and even paragraphs, it is usually because the organization is also expressing how it plans to reach or create the mission, usually the four or five key strategies it will use to accompliah the basic mission. This process is better left for later in strategic planning when the organization develops strategies, goals, and action plans. It just confuses the process of identifying your organizations basic mission at this stage. Your goal when you develop your mission is descriptive, memorable, and short. The mission is translated into actionable plans via the development of a mission statement. The Impact of Your Mission on Employees If you have successfully assimilated and integrated your mission into your company culture, every employee should be able to verbally share the mission statement. Each employees actions should demonstrate the mission in action. The mission, along with the vision and the values or guiding principles, provides the touchstone, with which employees in your organization make decisions. The best missions are kept front and center in an organization. They are frequently communicated by senior employees who give examples of the mission being accomplished in real employee stories that demonstrate the appropriate actions. The mission is often publicized by employees as a part of their signature file in email communications. It is posted on the companys About webpage. It is shared on social media and in job postings for prospective employees. It is used as a tool for communicating and as a PR tagline to serve the organizations best interests. Sample Organization Missions These sample organizational missions are provided to demonstrate the proper way to create a mission. Google: To organize the worlds information and make it universally accessible and useful. Microsoft: Our mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Public Broadcasting System (PBS): To create content that educates, informs, and inspires. Nordstrom: To give customers the most compelling shopping experience possible.   Uber: We ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion. Paypal: To build the webs most convenient, secure, cost effective payment solution. The Nature Conservancy: Since 1951, The Nature Conservancy has worked to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends. If Nothing Else, Do These 5 Things on Your Resume

If Nothing Else, Do These 5 Things on Your Resume If Nothing Else, Do These 5 Things on Your Resume 54“I can’t wait to update my resume and apply for some jobs!” said no one, ever. But since it must be done, if you do nothing else, do these five things on your resume. We get it. Resume writing is not your favorite pastime. Most people would probably rather clean their house from top to bottom. However, a clean house will not land you your next job- unless you’re in the cleaning industry, we suppose. So we’re making this as painless as possible for you by choosing the five things you must absolutely do when updating your resume. That’s right, five- a number so small, you can count it on one hand. So let’s get started. Here are five things to put on your resume: 1. Create a value statement. Just as much as you’re dreading writing your resume, the hiring manager is dreading reading your resume. A value statement will make this quick and painless for both of you, because it will state everything they need to know about what you should put on your  resume. Your value statement, sometimes called a Summary of Qualifications, must include what you do, how many years of experience you have, your academic credentials, your industry expertise, and a sample of your most relevant and significant achievements to capture the hiring manager’s attention. 2. State your current role, even if youre unemployed. The first question on every hiring manager’s mind is “What are you doing right now?” If you are working, you should have your current role listed on the first page with the date (month and year) that you entered the role. This is important to state on your resume. If you’re in school, you should have your program listed on the first page with your estimated date of completion so the employer knows when you will be available to enter a full-time role. If you’re doing neither, you can’t leave this question unanswered on your resume. Don’t go into details about your personal life, but express your situation in the most professional way possible. Many job seekers use terms such as: Personal Sabbatical, Medical Leave of Absence, Maternity/Paternity Leave, etc. 3. Talk about your achievements. Don’t list your daily responsibilities under your work experience. Everyone who has your job title completes those same responsibilities and also lists them on their resume. You want to stand out from that crowd. By describing your value-added achievements, you are personalizing your resume. This will also show the hiring manager that you are a proactive employee, rather than an employee who simply logs their eight hours a day without giving a second thought to how they can improve the company’s operations. 4. List your academic credentials. Almost every job on the market requires some level of completed education. Whether you went to school last year or a decade ago, it needs to be stated on your resume. If your education is the most relevant experience you have towards the role you are applying for, go into detail about what you learned, the courses you completed, and even the projects you submitted. If your experience outweighs your education, simply stating the program you completed and the school you attended will do the trick. 5. Get a professional format. After you’ve drafted all of this information, format the resume. Typed words on paper with a few underlines and page breaks are not enough. If your resume doesn’t look professional, you don’t look professional. There are free templates available online, and most word processors provide you with resume templates to work with. You can even ask your friends and family members what their resumes look like and get them to send over their format to you. All you have to do is delete their information and add yours! That’s it; those are the five must-haves on your resume. If you can’t muster up the motivation to at least knock these five off the list, then you shouldn’t waste your time applying for jobs. Your resume won’t get noticed among the hundreds of applicants, and you’ll find yourself in the same pickle you’re in now. So take a few minutes to complete these five must-dos on your resume. Your job search will thank you. Related: Take Credit: What Youre Not Including on Your Resume but Should Readers, what are the must-haves on your  resume?
